Supermarkets open Christmas Day in Melbourne

In need of groceries? Melbourne has very few supermarkets open Christmas Day so you’ll want to try to be organised by Christmas Eve. If there’s something you’ve missed, there are a few independents that can get you out of trouble.  

IGA

Some IGA stores will be open Christmas Day for those last minute essentials or forgotten supplies. Follow the links to their websites/Facebook pages for up-to-date hours.

Convenience stores and independent operators

Convenience stores like 7-Eleven are allowed to open Christmas Day. There are several shops across Melbourne so if all else fails a convenience store near you should be open.

We’ve verified that these 7-Eleven shops open Christmas Day:

  • 7-Eleven, Bourke Street

Aldi

Aldi stores trade until 8pm Christmas Eve and then close Christmas Day. Stores will re-open across Melbourne at 9am on Boxing Day, remaining open until 7pm or 8pm depending on the store.

Coles

All Coles supermarkets are open Christmas Eve and then closed on Christmas Day. All Melbourne Coles stores, except Little Knox, will open again on Boxing Day. Check their website for your nearest store’s hours.

Woolworths supermarkets

All Woolworths supermarkets are closed on Christmas Day, so you’ll need to get your shopping done by Christmas Eve. All Melbourne Woolies stores will re-open on Boxing Day.

Shops open on Christmas Day in Melbourne

While some small independent shops may be open to pick up essentials and other odds and ends, there are no major shops open Christmas Day in Melbourne.

K-Mart, Big W, Target, Myer, David Jones, Bunnings and Ikea must close on Christmas Day under Victoria’s trading laws. To avoid disappointment you’ll need to get your shopping done by Christmas Eve. Check each store’s websites for the most up-to-date trading hours for your nearest store.

K-Mart – Stores will close at 10pm on Christmas Eve. All Melbourne stores are closed Christmas Day and will re-open at 8am on Boxing Day, with Burwood, Campbellfield, Narre Warren and Werribee commencing 24 hour trading.

Big W – All stores close Christmas Day and re-open 8am-6pm on Boxing Day.

Target – Melbourne stores are open Christmas Eve until 10pm or 11pm, depending on the store. All stores close Christmas Day and re-open Boxing Day.

Myer – Myer stores close at 6pm Christmas Eve except for Werribee, which closes at 5.30pm, and Eastland and Highpoint stores, which close at 5pm. All stores are closed Christmas Day and re-open on Boxing Day, with the Melbourne City and Chadstone stores opening at 5am.

David Jones – All stores close Christmas Day and re-open on Boxing Day.

Bunnings – Stores across Melbourne will trade until 7pm Christmas Eve. All stores are closed Christmas Day and will re-open on Boxing Day.

Ikea – Stores will close at 5pm on Christmas Eve. The stores are closed Christmas Day and re-open at 10am on Boxing Day.

Victoria’s liquor laws have restrictions for Christmas Day trading so you may have to hunt around to find which pubs open on Christmas Day in Melbourne. We’ve found these places that will be open for a drink:

  • Arbory Afloat, Flinders Walk (12 – 10pm; set menus only)
  • Bistro Guillaume, Whiteman Street(12pm-10:30pm; set menu)
  • The Windsor, Spring Street (lunch; set menu)
  • Thai Town, Artemis Lane (12pm-12am)

Almost all bottle shops in Melbourne are closed on Christmas Day, except for some BWS drive-thru outlets and a couple of Dan Murphy’s stores. Check their websites to see if there’s a bottle shop open near you. Otherwise, you’ll need to get your purchases before closing time on Christmas Eve. Bottle shops open again on Boxing Day.
