While most stores close, we’ve pulled together a list of what is open on Christmas Day in Sydney that should get you out of trouble.

We’ve dug around to find which restaurants open on Christmas Day in Sydney where you can enjoy lunch while someone else does the hard work. Supermarkets open Christmas Day in Sydney

In need of groceries? Sydney has very few supermarkets open Christmas Day so you’ll want to try to be organised by Christmas Eve. If there’s something you’ve missed, there are a few independents that can get you out of trouble.  

Foodworks

Foodworks stores are independently operated and can open if they choose. We’ve been able to verify that these Foodworks supermarkets open Christmas Day either for the full day or part day. Click on the links to their Facebook pages for up-to-date hours.

Convenience stores and independent operators

Convenience stores like 7-Eleven are allowed to open Christmas Day. There are several shops across Sydney so if all else fails a convenience store near you should be open.

In addition, these independent operators typically open Christmas Day:

  • Kings Wharf Supermarket, 9 Erskine Street, Sydney (open 24 hours every day)
  • 7 Eleven, 64 Clarence Street, Sydney (open 24 hours every day)
  • 7 Eleven, 465 Kent Street, Sydney (open 24 hours every day)

Aldi

Aldi stores trade until 8pm Christmas Eve and then close Christmas Day. Stores will re-open across Sydney on Boxing Day, except for the Leichhardt and Liverpool Centre stores.

Coles

Coles supermarkets across Sydney are closed on Christmas Day, so you’ll need to get your shopping done by Christmas Eve. If you’ve left it a bit late, the World Square store in George Street will stay open until midnight. All Sydney Coles stores, except Smithfield, will open on Boxing Day. Check their website for your nearest store’s hours.

Woolworths supermarkets

All Woolworths supermarkets are closed on Christmas Day. You can pick up supplies from Woolies on Christmas Eve or when they re-open on Boxing Day.

Shops open on Christmas Day in Sydney

New South Wales’ trading laws mean there are few shops open Christmas Day in Sydney. While some small independent shops may be open to pick up essentials and other odds and ends, for the most part you’ll need to get your shopping done by Christmas Eve.

Major stores including K-Mart, Big W, Target, Myer, David Jones, Bunnings and Ikea will all close on Christmas Eve and re-open on Boxing Day. Check each store’s websites for the most up-to-date trading hours for your nearest store.

K-Mart – Stores will close at 10pm on Christmas Eve except for Casula, which closes at midnight. All Sydney stores are closed Christmas Day and will re-open at 8am on Boxing Day, with Casula, Mt Druitt and Penrith commencing 24 hour trading.

Big W – All stores close Christmas Day and re-open 8am Boxing Day.

Target – All stores close Christmas Day and re-open Boxing Day.

Myer – Myer stores close at 6pm Christmas Eve and are closed Christmas Day. Stores re-open on Boxing Day, with the Sydney City store opening at 5am.

David Jones – All stores close Christmas Day and re-open on Boxing Day.

Bunnings – Stores close Christmas Day and re-open on Boxing Day.

Ikea stores will close at 5pm on Christmas Eve except for Tempe, which closes at 7pm. The stores close Christmas Day and re-open on Boxing Day.

Restaurants, cafés & pubs open Christmas Day in Sydney

New South Wales’ trading laws mean there are no pubs open on Christmas Day in Sydney, although some bars are now allowed to open. There are, however, plenty of restaurants open Christmas Day, and a bunch of cafes are open for that caffeine fix. We have a full list of bars, cafés and restaurants open Christmas Day 2023 in Sydney. These are a few of our favourites.

Pubs open Christmas Day

As of 2020, New South Wales’ liquor laws have changed to make it possible to get a drink out on Christmas Day. There are still no pubs open on Christmas Day, but small bars can trade from midday. Here are a few we know will open for a tipple:

  • The Star, Darling Harbour
  • Bar One, Sydney Harbour
  • Grain Bar, Circular Quay
  • Sofitel’s Champagne Bar, Darling Harbour
  • Intercontinental Rooftop Bar, Double Bay

Restaurants open Christmas Day

There are plenty of Sydney restaurants open on Christmas Day, many offering special Christmas lunch menus.  These include:

  • Pier One and The Gantry
  • Fratelli’s (all four venues)
  • Sheraton Grand
  • El Camino Cantina, Manly
  • Ho Jiak, Haymarket
  • Continental Deli, Newtown
  • Sake Restaurant and Bar, Manly

Bottle shops open Christmas Day

All bottle shops in Sydney are closed on Christmas Day. You’ll need to get your purchases before closing time on Christmas Eve. Bottle shops open again on Boxing Day.

Chemists open on Christmas Day in Sydney

There’s nothing worse than coming down sick over Christmas, but if you do you’ll need to know if there’s a chemist open Christmas Day. Some late night chemists or 24 hour chemists include:

  • Crows Nest Day Night Chemist, 99 Willoughby Road, open every day 8.30am – 10pm
  • Terry White Chemmart Penrith, 438 High Street, open 24 hours, every day
  • Balmain Compounding Pharmacy, 298 Darling Street, open 9am – 7pm
