Kids Christmas movies

Load up Netflix or Stan and you’ll be overwhelmed by the amount of kids Christmas movies that are available to watch. However, as any parent can tell you, quantity is not necessarily an indicator of quality!

Here are our favourite kids Christmas movies perfect for creating a new family tradition. Quite a few of these are old classics but there’s just something special about them that is sure to bring the whole family together.  Some of these are better suited for slightly older kids as well but, generally speaking, there’s something for everyone.

Christmas movies for Toddlers

Arthur Christmas

We’ve been watching this movie every year since our kids were babies. How CAN Santa deliver billions of presents to the whole world in just one night? With an army of one million combat-style Field Elves and a vast, state-of-the-art control center under the ice of the North Pole! This is a really fun movie for the whole family and you’ll probably find yourself watching it to the end even when the little ones have nodded off to sleep.

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer

Remember watching this one when you were little?! It’s a timeless classic that you’ll find you can’t resist sitting down to watch with the kids. Some great messages here about bullying and treating others the way you’d like to be treated, too!

Christmas Movies for school aged kids

How The Grinch Stole Christmas

You’re a mean one, Mr Grinch! This is Jim Carrey at his cheekiest as this classic Dr Seuss tale comes to life. The Grinch sets out to destroy Christmas only to be… well, we don’t want to spoil the ending! A really fun family favourite that’s sure to delight.

The Polar Express

This movie made leaps and bounds in terms of CGI and even though it looks a little dated now it’s still a fabulous Christmas tale of an incredible journey. It includes the vocal talents of Tom Hanks! That makes me feel like watching ‘Big’, anyone else?

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Okay, this one is a kids Christmas movie with a SPOOKY twist! It’s certainly a favourite for some of our kids but, depending on who is in your house, it might be a little too scary. Jack Skellington tries to bring Christmas to Halloween Land and it all goes HORRIBLY wrong.

Home Alone

Madcap shenanigans, hapless burglars and a cute Kevin McAllister make this a classic kids Christmas movie! The kids will be doubled over with giggles while you wonder just what kind of a job Kevin’s dad had that he could afford THAT house and fly THAT many people to PARIS for a holiday.

Home Alone 2: Lost In New York

“We forgot Kevin… again!” In the follow up to Home Alone, Kevin’s Lost in New York and on the run from the Wet Bandits once again. This film has a beautiful soundtrack and a ‘blink if you’ll miss it’ appearance from the future President of the United States of America.

He just… loves… Christmas. Will Ferrell plays the biggest Elf you’ve ever seen. Buddy goes on a mission to discover his true origins. It’s silly, it’s funny and it’s gently humourous enough for everyone to enjoy.

The Santa Clause

This is DEFINITELY one of the best kids Christmas movies! Tim Allen takes over the Santa tradition and has to learn the way of the Clause. Slapstick humour and good old family values combine to make this a great viewing for everyone!

Classic Christmas Movies

Santa Claus: The Movie

This is definitely an old fashioned one but it’s a timeless family favourite. This kids Christmas movie tells the origin of Santa Claus (via Dudley Moore and John Lithgow). When the meaning of Christmas is threatened by big business, the legend comes to life in a way that’ll leave even the cynics in the audience sniffling.

It’s A Wonderful Life

The messages in this one might be difficult for smaller children to take in but this family kids Christmas movie classic is definitely worth a look. Follow one man’s journey as he realises that everyone makes a difference and that each of us has a very special role to play in the lives of others.

Miracle on 34th Street

Another golden oldie! “Yes Virginia, there IS a Santa Claus!” This is a kids Christmas movie that truly stands the test of time. Introduce it to your household! (There’s a Black and White version or this one, below, from 1994 – both are excellent choices!)

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

There are some rude jokes in this one (as with all National Lampoon films) so beware if that’s not your thing! The Griswolds try to embrace the REAL meaning of Christmas but things get a little bent out of shape along the way…

I’ll Be Home For Christmas

90’s teenagers will relate! Jonathan Taylor Thomas (YES, THE JTT!) stars in this comedy about a selfish college kid trying to make it home in time for Christmas. He learns a few lessons along the way but… he’s also just pretty cute. Squee!

A Muppet Christmas Carol

The story of Ebenezer Scrooge as told through the Muppets! What’s not to love? This is by far one of the best Muppet outings and it’s sure to be a real hit!

Jack Frost

Michael Keaton, you old so and so! His job keeps him away from his family more often than any of them would like until, one fateful night, a tragedy occurs followed by a Christmas miracle. Be warned – this can be a tear jerker, particularly if your family has lost a loved one.

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town

Here’s another old school one that’ll take you back! This is a movie that attempts to bring together the Santa story with the true meaning of Christmas. It’s heart warming, the claymation will make you laugh (and wince a little bit) and it’s pretty darn cute.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

Teach your kids about the true meaning of Christmas with this animated classic that follows Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang who are upset by the commercialization of Christmas. Can they figure out a way to get to the holiday’s deeper meaning?
